Data & Infographics workshop

We were tasked with collecting our own data from field research, and putting that data into a infographic. At first it seemed very simple, but as we got further into the workshop, I realised that there’s more to infographics than numbers and nice looking diagrams.

I was ill the first two days, luckily my studdy buddies went ahead and did the fieldresearch and collected the data needed to continue the workshop. I arrived on the third day, with only the knowledge from the documents and videos from the first two days. It wasn’t a problem getting with the times, so i quickly caught up. We then used the third day to group up our data, by collectively putting post-it notes on a whiteboard with the data we got. This resulted in patterns appearing infront of us, that we beforehand didn’t realise were there.

Creating the infographic

After figuring out what the data told us, we each picked a user story that we created to each group of data. I picked structure as my userstory, where the problem was a lack of structure in UCL. We then created a infographic from the userstories and data, and this is what i ended up with.

Reflection

I’ve learned a lot that i didn’t know of beforehand, i thought i knew a lot of infographics due to my own personal interest in it. But i didn’t know how much planning and research played a role in getting good results. Even more the brainstorming when the data is collected, to figure out the patterns, because data can show us a lot of new angles on a subject that isn’t visible by simply observing it. Lastly i learned about a lot of new ways to illustrate knowledge through visual information.
