Project 2 – Fjord&Bælt installation

Shortly after finishing our first project, we started our second. This one was different and more hands on, I thought.

We were tasked with creating an idea for an installation at Fjord&Bælt, a company that researches sea porpoises, seals, and other sea creatures. Besides that, they also have an aquarium/center where people can experience their research and animals. Our school have a deal with Fjord&Bælt, where we get a chance to work with them and create an installation idea for them.

We had the chance to choose our own group for this project. I had a good work ethic with my previous group members and decided to stick with Malte again. We then formed a group with Emil and Freja. Whom we thought would fit in well. Which they did.

We spent a bit less time in this project on planning our time, but we still made a schedule and assigned each other to different tasks. This worked better than the method we used in the first project, and the workflow was sped up by this way of doing it. We also spent more time on keeping a focus on design thinking and letting that method direct our work.

After planning we started researching. We researched our target audience, dry data, and information about Fjord&Bælt. We figured out a target group and started brainstorming ideas.

After our midway pitch where we got feedback from our teacher, we decided to go with our first idea/concept which is shown above. The idea was to create a room where children or adults for that matter could experience a day as a scientist. The room had to be inclusive of different age groups but was directed at children. So, the room was designed to have stations with games or interactive ‘missions’ for the participants to complete and score as high as possible. They’d get a printed ID card where they can show off their badges from completed tasks, and then end the experience with a collective quiz game.

We spent some time on perfecting the idea. But the idea was large in terms of aspirations, so we’d never get the perfect prototype due to the scale of the idea. We had a content creation module where we got close to what tone of voice and features, we wanted to stick with.

The next step was to go from digital creation to a more hands-on approach, since we had to present the idea to both Fjord&Bælt but also other students or people with an interest for the project. We made a few stations with laptops. Some running our introduction video, others showing an example of the quiz and we had printed flyers and a poster.

In the end I think we did a great job, and I found the more hands-on approach exciting. Especially the fact that we had to do it with a real company. This time around we had a bigger focus on design thinking, and the report was easier to  set up due to the knowledge we had  with InDesign from the  last project.
